Can learning the Rubik’s cube really offer all that?
Yes it can. Do not underestimate its value.
This is an activity which has the potential to slow down an overactive mind, drawing you away from concerns about the past, worrying about the present and anxiety about the future.
Who is this tuition for?
Adults who are interested in learning a new skill which provides an alternative to electronic entertainment as well as a more satisfying way to utilise their already valuable time.
Isn’t it just mathematicians, scientists and university professors who can solve the Rubik’s cube?
Yes some of them can work out how to navigate the cube given enough hours, days or weeks to try over and over. However, it does not need to be that way. There is a method which is available to everyone.
I don’t think I’m clever enough?
Everyone has their own internal dialogue about what they think they can or cannot do regarding the cube.
Many people already have preconceptions about their abilities with the cube.
I will simply repeat that, there is a method that anyone can learn if they want to try.
Do I need to be good at maths?
There is no maths involved.
Learning the method for solving the cube is much more about logical thinking, which can be developed and enhanced as you proceed.
So I need no prior experience?
Yes that is right, you can learn from the very beginning with a clearly defined step by step beginner’s method.
What is involved?
There are seven steps to learn one by one.
There is some simple notation to learn.
You can proceed to the next step when you are ready.
No rush, no pressure, learn at your own pace.
So will I need to practise between lessons?
Just as you would expect to apply yourself to learning a sport or a musical instrument, practice is necessary.
How much will I need to practise?
Only you can answer that. The rate of learning and rate of progress is an individual thing. Some people like to cram their learning while others like to take a more leisurely approach. Either is fine as long as you are comfortable.
What do I need to know before I begin?
You will need to be able to differentiate between colours.
You will need to know the difference between left and right.
You will need to know the difference between clockwise and anti-clockwise.
Other than these, if you have an interest in learning then you’re ready to begin.
What do I need to bring to the lessons?
Bring your own puzzle – any brand, (non - Rubik are available) standard colour scheme no novelty cubes
Pen and paper for making notes.
A willingness to learn.
Where can I buy a puzzle?
Recommended for excellent quality, price and delivery.
From that website you can pretty much choose any 3 x 3 x 3 from the many manufacturers that specialise in fabulous puzzles.
They will be all great to handle, adding positively to your puzzle learning experience.
Having said that, if you particularly want the Rubik’s brand, you can buy them from Hamleys, The Entertainer and Argos, however, be warned they cost considerably more and are regarded by many as less pleasing to handle.
Where will the lessons be held?
The one to one tuition will take place at Health Zone in the privacy of one of the therapy rooms.
Who is the teacher?
You will have the benefit of learning with Carole, Health Zone’s resident reiki master and Rubik’s cube enthusiast.
How long are the lessons?
Carole is offering 55 minute sessions.
How long does it take to learn?
There are seven steps and it mostly depends on how long you wish to give yourself to practise and be comfortable with each step.
However, there is no need to compare yourself with anyone as it will be your own personal journey.
Who cares how long it takes?
It is widely acknowledged that once the method is learned, the first time that you intentionally complete it yourself is a hugely satisfying experience and one not easily forgotten.
When I have finished the course and learned the steps, how long will it take me to solve the cube?
Easily around two to three minutes with your acquired knowledge and new skill.
Some people can even solve in around a minute with the beginner’s method.
Will I be able to solve any Rubik’s cube?
You will be able to solve any 3 x 3 x 3 cube with regulation colour scheme.
What about when the colours are all mixed up, is it sometimes harder than others.
With the beginner’s method you will learn how to solve any cube like the one you have learned regardless of how ‘mixed up’ the colours are.
I saw someone on the television doing the Rubik’s cube in about ten seconds. Will I be able to do that at the end of the beginner course?
That is a particular skill learned with advanced techniques.
That level of achievement requires high levels of application and dedication to learn, practise and master. It is probably safe to assume that they learned the beginner’s method first, then they decided to take the route to ‘speed cubing’.
What can I do after I’ve learned the beginner’s method?
There is a whole world of beautiful, exquisite, magnificent puzzles available and waiting for you to add to your life. Each one with its solving challenges as well as reasoning and creativity possibilities. They come in a wonderful array of shapes and patterns and many are based on the regular Rubik’s cube solving formula.
Why don’t I just learn from youtube for free?
Of course you can try, if you know what to look for, if you know where to look and if you can find one that you can follow.
My experience is that the frustration levels for learning that way can be disappointingly high.
However it is a personal decision, so if you already know that you learn well that way, then go for it!
What is the advantage of learning with Carole?
Carole is passionate about cubing.
She has taught people successfully and really enjoys the process.
She will guide you in a calm, relaxed environment.
She offers her undivided attention during your acquisition of this new skill.
She will teach you clearly and supportively during each step of the course.
There really is no substitute for having someone who knows what they are doing to sit beside you when you learn the magnificence of this simple yet intriguing puzzle.
